Ohio Star Theater is changing!
As an important step in the process of change, Tammie McKenzie has assumed the role of Artistic Director at Ohio Star Theater.
The Theater is excited to welcome Tammie. With expertise and experience in all aspects of theatre, the Canton native will be an integral part of Ohio Star Theater’s future plans.
McKenzie has a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts from Grove City College and a Master of Fine Arts in Acting from Ohio University, but it is her vast experience that will most benefit Ohio Star Theater.
Early in her career, she worked on stage at the Cincinnati Playhouse and the Pennsylvania Stage Company, became a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, toured with Saltworks Theatre Company, and lived and worked in theatre in New York City.
Back in Canton, Ohio, as a professor at Malone University for over 25 years, Tammie served as Director of Theatre.
Tammie has been involved in the creation of Crossroads Theatre, CITA (Christians in Theatre Arts), and served as founder of Our Stories OurSelves Project in Verde Valley, AZ. She taught youth/adult classes and directed shows at the Players Guild of Canton, Ohio, and created and implemented a theater curriculum for grades K-12 in Sedona, Arizona.
She has served as an Assistant Director for the Canton Symphony Opera, Owensboro Symphony Opera, and Arizona Opera.
“I’ve directed more shows than I can count,” says McKenzie. In her modest estimation she says “It’s more than 50,” but when pressed she will admit “I’m sure it is close to 100 shows, but that sounds like a lot,” she said.
Most recently, Tammie was Director of Education at The Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, servicing Akron Public Schools and developing curriculum for enrichment programs for after-school programs.
Bringing her expertise to Ohio Star Theater, Tammie will guide Ohio Star Theater through the transition from hosting Blue Gate Musicals toward a new and exciting direction and change.
